From Inspiration to Animation: Where I Find Creative Ideas

Because “I just stare at my screen until something happens” isn’t the best approach…

Creative block is the worst, but here’s the thing, ideas don’t always come from staring at a blank After Effects timeline. They come from the world around us, often when we’re not looking for them.

So where do I steal - uh I mean - find inspiration to my ideas?

Caitlin's work for Pampers newsletter.

Music & Rhythm – Ever animated something to a beat? Even if it’s just tapping your foot while working, music can inspire timing, mood, and energy.

Photography & Design - Good composition in a still image translates directly into strong motion layouts.

Real-World Movement –
Watch how people move, how water flows, how birds take off. Real-life physics makes for better animation.

Films & Cartoons –
Motion designers are basically magpies—we take little bits from everything. Old-school animation, modern VFX, even low-budget indie stuff can spark ideas.

Everyday Scenarios
– Ever gotten inspired by a weird pattern in a coffee spill? Just me? Okay.

Gather and save your inspiration in whatever way works for you: screenshots, Pinterest boards, sketchbooks, or even voice notes. You never know which small spark might ignite something bigger. Quick tests and random doodles can evolve into something great down the line.

And don’t be afraid to mix things up. The most exciting ideas often come from unexpected combinations. Creativity thrives on curiosity, so collect, test, and mash it all together to bring your vision to life.

Final Thought: Creativity is just connecting dots. If you ever feel stuck, step away from the screen. Inspiration is hiding in places you wouldn’t expect, you just have to notice it!
